Lavender Questions

  • What is lavender?

Lavender, known by its scientific name “Lavandula” is an herb related to the mint family. There are over 47 different species (different than varieties.) Lavender has been dated back to the Mediterranean and Middle East over 2,500 years ago. Lavender is commonly used for relaxation, culinary, and crafting.

  • What type of soil is best?

Soil or dirt is one of the most important key ingredients (aside from sunshine!) that lavender needs in order to thrive.

We suggest soil that has good drainage, loamy (sandy-ish) and a ph between 7.5 and 8 (slightly alkaline.) Lavender prefers to keep its roots on the dryer side, so make sure to keep your plants in a well-drained, well ventilated area to prevent mold and root rot.

  • What are your favorite kinds of lavender?

We love all lavender, but if we have to narrow it down, we would choose many of the Lavandula Angustifolia and Lavandula x Intermedia varieties. Check out our Instagram for updates on specific varieties we’re growing!

  • How do I grow lavender?

Lavender can be a temperamental herb if it doesn’t have these basic requirements:

    • Full sun (at least 75% per day) ☀️

    • Good soil drainage (lavender HATES keeping its roots constantly damp…think of it like wet socks)

    • Good quality soil (loamy, aka sandy, no mud or clay, and a ph of 7.5-8 is…chef’s kiss 💋)

  • Do I need to cut my lavender?

Since we’re a lavender farm we always say yes, harvest your lavender when it’s ready (depending on the variety) between early Summer (early-mid June) through early August.

If you desire to enjoy your lavender on the plant for the season, that is fine too!

For the health of the plant:
We recommend trimming your lavender into a tight hedge shape (if possible) making sure not to cut past the woody stems.
After the blooming season (usually late Summer or early Fall) is a great time to prune back into a tight hedge,
OR in early Spring (March or April) to ensure new growth for the upcoming growing season.
